In 2004, KB Toys filed for bankruptcy only a few short years after a Bain buyout. Bain used the company to pay themselves an $85 million dividend, but KB and its employees did not fare nearly as well—nearly half of KB’s stores were reportedly closed and thousands of workers were laid off.
